Clinic Appointment

Gess had clinic today. I had to go to court so I wasn't able to go, but he gave me the blow-by-blow. Unfortunately there was some bad news. His PFTs are the lowest ever, with a predicted FEV1% of 35%. This is down by about 8% from baseline (he hasn't been able to do PFTs in awhile because of the lung bleeding, so his "baseline" could have slid down gradually).

The other bad news is that his weight is down to 112 pounds. This puts his BMI at 18.1. He has to be at least an 18 for transplant and they really want him to be much higher. So he needs to gain weight. If he can't do it on his own, they will put in a feeding tube. Apparently a feeding tube can be problematic with transplant too, so hopefully we won't have to go that route. For now it is going to be eating, eating, eating and at least 3 ensures a day.

ugh. sorry lisa. it sucks when these sort of drops take you by surprise, but here's hoping gess can regain at least a little ground. as for the weight gain, i found that forcing myself to drink 6-8 boost plusses a day i could gain weight. i literally had to sit down, steel myself, and basically chant "this is my number one priority" over and over to get it done - then i would do it all in one sitting. but it was worth it to avoid the tube, and i was glad i had that weight at tx considering i lost over 15 lbs in the hospital even though i was only there 2 weeks. i think with CF we're used to considering weight kind of tangental to the "real" issue (esp those of us with serious lung issues), and the truth is that right before tx when your lungs are crap anyway, the weight is one of the MORE important aspects, b/c you actually have a chance fr improvement there. anyway, much love and luck. am thinking of you always!
